1 January, 2003: US troops start deploying to the Persian Gulf region.
20 March, 2003: George W. Bush declares war on Iraq and sends an airstrike against Saddam Hussein.
9 April, 2003: Saddam Hussein's rule collapses and the US takes over Baghdad.
1 May, 2003: George W. Bush declares the war over and stops large combat operations.
13 December, 2003: Saddam Hussein is arrested by American soldiers.
28 June, 2004: American authorities give power over Iraq to it's newly appointed leaders.
7 November, 2004: Between 10,000 and 15,000 American soldiers and Marines with newly trained Iraqi forces storm Falluja in an attempt to retake the area and defeat 3,000 to 4,000 insurgent fighters.
19 October, 2005: Saddam Hussein's court trial. He was charged for a number of crimes against humanity and was hanged in an execution chamber in Baghdad 30 December 2006 during the morning call to prayer.
5 January 2009: US Embassy set up in Baghdad.
15 December, 2011: End of the war. The US withdrew from Iraq with 3,000 to 4,000 US soldiers left to train Iraqi forces.
