Australia's Role
Australia, under the leadership of Prime minister John Howard, sent troops to support the US in its war against Iraq. Australia was part of a coalition of countries (predominantly the US, Australia and Britain) that belived that Iraq did possess weapons of mass destruction and that it was affiliated with terrorist organisations and needed to be stopped. Australia's involvement was from 2003 to 2009. Examples of the support provided included the Royal Australian Navy divers that cleared sea mines and other explosives and the Special Air Service that was engaged in direct combat. More than 20,000 Australian Defence Force personnel went to Iraq between March 2003 and July 2009.
